Although it is only 3.5 km. and 6 km. respectively from the lively seaside resorts of Kalyves and Almirida the village is in a quiet, agricultural setting. The principal activities are growing olives and producing olive oil.  There are also many fields of vines, a few small orange groves and a few fields of avocados.
There is no noticeable commercial rearing of livestock although many people keep three or four sheep or goats and a few chickens for their own needs.
The only shop in the village is the small kafeneio that also acts as social centre, information exchange, occasional post office and landmark for guiding visitors. The shop stocks fresh bread, eggs, fruit, seasonal vegetables, canned foods, biscuits etc. and the owners will buy in particular items on request (avoids going far for a particular brand of ouzo or scotch).
There are many excellent tavernas within easy reach, say, within 5 or 6 km at Kalyves, Vamos, Almirida, Armenoi and other villages around the area.
Kalyves has a largish supermarket, several mini-markets, butchers, greengrocers, a variety of other shops, hairdressers, petrol stations etc. In other words, it's a thriving small town. Vamos is a smaller version of Kalyves in terms of shopping facilities.
There are larger supermarkets on the 'right' side of Hania with Champion (Carre Four) and Lidl just off the highway at the 'hospital exit' and Halkiadakis (Spar) on the Souda/Hania road.
The property is within 5 km of the National Highway so both Hania (25-40 mins.) and Rethimno (30-45 mins.) are within easy reach. (Timings vary according to season, exact route etc.). Hania airport is 35 minutes' drive and Iraklio is about 90 minutes.
