A more detailed look at the ‘statue’ in Matala.
Matala is most famous for its man made caves, carved out of the cliffs of the bay. First inhabited in the prehistoric age and used as dwellings and places of worship. Later, in Greek, Roman and early Christian periods the caves were used as tombs.
In the late ‘60s and ‘70s many hippies went to Matala and created a community, living in the caves until they were eventually driven out by the local population.
